J-tunes daily: Kanon Wakeshima - Still Doll

Song of the day
Kanon Wakeshima - Still Doll

Sung by singer and cellist extraordinaire Kanon Wakeshima, and released under the Japanese record label DefStar Records, her debut single "Still Doll" was used as the ending theme to the anime adaptation of the Shōjo manga series, Vampire Knight, her second single "Suna no Oshiro" was also used for the anime's second season titled, Vampire Knight (Guilty).

Opening with the powerful and atmospheric sounds of cello, accompanied by the childish yet eerie tunes of xylophone. Still Doll is a strangely unsettling song, yet due to some very competent musical composition it is oddly pleasant to listen to. Kanon's expressive and melodic sounding vocals stand in stark contrast to the eerie sounds provided by the instrumentation, whilst her exceptional cello playing skills elevate the piece to new heights, creating a tone that is both beautiful yet unnerving.

"Still Doll" remains to this day, as one of my personal favourite theme songs to any anime, not to mention being a strangely beautiful piece all on its own.
